Week 4 of The Bachelorette was emotional, dramatic, and ended with an unexpected surprise. Aren’t you glad you got to have your ex come back into your life not on national television?

The week kicked off with a one-on-one date between Jenn and Sam M. They were mostly on top of a very, very tall building and initially Sam M. seemed a bit disconnected from the moment, but he eventually came around, offering a fearful Jenn the support she needed. Later, Jenn opened up about her parents' divorce and the lingering feelings of unworthiness it left her with. Sam M. shared his own heart-wrenching story of a prior engagement that ended in betrayal when he discovered his fiancée was cheating on him. There is a rawness to Jenn and Sam M. that just works, and their connection grows stronger.

Next up was a group date dubbed Rugby Royale. The guys suited up and hit the field, and while Sam N. certainly turned up for Jenn, his overly aggressive behavior started to rub the other guys the wrong way. In a move that felt straight out of an eighth grade field trip, Sam N. asked Jenn if he could kiss her. Unfortunately for him, it would be his first and last proposal of the season, leading to an awkward moment before Jenn ultimately walked him out. Meanwhile, Marcus snagged the group date rose and further solidified his status as a frontrunner.

Devin’s one-on-one date with Jenn followed. They bonded over their shared experiences of parental absence, with Devin opening up about his parents not being together during his childhood. Jenn reciprocated, sharing her own story about her dad’s disappearance from her life. Their mutual understanding and shared trauma creates a deep connection, and Devin isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Finally, just before the rose ceremony Jenn’s ex-boyfriend Matthew made a surprise appearance. He apparently flew halfway across the world to New Zealand on his own dime to confess that he is still in love with Jenn. He asked to join the show, which Jenn found kind of ridiculous, and she seemed torn.

Chasing Gold

Right now it’s hard to imagine Sam M. not winning Jenn’s heart and getting down on one knee at season's end. Although, the arrival of Matthew brings with it an Olympic sized swimming pool of drama. How long that lasts remains to be seen. That said, four contestants seem to have risen above the rest and that’s Sam M., Marcus, Devin, and Jonathan. Those four seem destined for hometowns. Who will reach the podium that is Fantasy Suites? Will Sam M. go wire to wire and claim the gold despite being the Simone Biles of bad vocabulary? These are questions only Jenn can answer for us, the games have certainly begun.
